This spectrometer built in collaboration between LQM at EPFL and PSI is scheduled to receive first neutrons ultimo 2018 and to be fully commissioned in 2020 after the complete upgrade of neutron guides at the SINQ continuous spallation source in 2019. Designed for massively parallel neutron detection, the CAMEA spectrometer will enable new types of experiments, in particular under high magnetic fields and large pressures, e.g. for studies of quantum magnetism and unconventional superconductors. The main tasks will include: - Managing the construction project in close collaboration with the technical project team, commission the instrument, and design software for instrument control and data-analysis - Perform experiments in collaboration with team-members from LQM, PSI and external users. - Contribute to the analysis, interpretation and publication of the experiments Your profile: - PhD in condensed matter physics or other area clearly related to the main tasks - Expertise in neutron spectroscopy - Previous experience in instrumentation and project management is helpful - Ability to keep good records of work, analyze, interpret data and publish - Ability to write software for data acquisition and analysis - Ability to collaborate with other scientists and PhD Students - Ability to work long hours and during weekends when conducting experiments at large scale facilities - Good communication skills in English. Knowledge of German language is an advantage Place of work will be at PSI, with regular collaborative visits to LQM at EPFL. The candidate will thus benefit from both the state of the art experimental facilities at PSI and contact to the academic environment at EPFL. Initial employment is for two years with possibility of extension. Our institutions are based on interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausannne (EPFL), with its main campus located in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the shores of lake Geneva is a dynamically growing and well-funded institution fostering excellence and diversity. It has a highly international campus with first-class infrastructure, including in particular facilities for material growth and characterization and in particular extensive and leading facilities for nano-fabrication (CMi). As a technical university covering essentially the entire palette of engineering and science, EPFL offers a fertile environment for research cooperation between different disciplines. The EPFL environment is multi-lingual and multi-cultural, with English often serving as a common interface. The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people.
