The Senior Engineering Stress Analyst functions as a member of the design team working on new or improved mechanical components for the SNS target and accelerator systems.   The position performs calculations that define the stresses in vessels, structures, and other components subjected to mechanical, pressure, and thermal loads. 



·         Builds mathematical models including 3D finite element models of structural components and vessels


·         Works with other engineering team members to define the thermal and mechanical loads on the components


·         Runs the codes, or employs other techniques, as required to calculate the resulting stress patterns on the components


·         Evaluates the stress results against a structural design criteria to determine the suitability of the analyzed component for its intended purpose


·         Proactively works as a member of a design team to identify modifications to reduce stresses in analyzed components.


·         Prepares detailed reports on the performed analyses


·         Presents results in project team meetings and/or in design reviews


·         Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.



Candidate must have BS in mechanical engineering, MS preferred, and a minimum seven years of experience in stress analysis using three dimensional finite element codes.   A sound understanding of structural mechanics and the application of numerical methods is required.  Experience in the analysis of ASME pressure vessels, and/or application of fracture mechanics, is desirable.  Candidate should have the ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems, have good analytical and computer skills, and possess the written and verbal communication skills necessary to function as in a key team role.
