Work with us on the grand challenges in the fields of health, energy & environment, and information technology, as well as on the many and varied tasks of research management. Forschungszentrum Juelich is focusing its expertise in research with neutrons at the Juelich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) and maintains outstations at different neutron sources amongst others at the high flux reactor in Grenoble, France. The Juelich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS), in collaboration with the CEA Grenoble, France, offers a graduate position on the research of magnetocaloric effect compounds. Saving energy is key to counteract the dramatic changes in the global climate and is one component of the energy revolution presently ongoing in many countries worldwide. One possibility for a more efficient use of energy in daily life is the use of magnetic refrigeration technologies, which can reach significant higher efficiencies than todays' gas compression devices. The main focus of your work will be inelastic neutron scattering studies on single crystals of specific compounds in the Mn-Fe-Si system, which exhibit a significant magnetocaloric effect. The underlying mechanism of the magnetocaloric effect and its relation to changes in the crystal structure are still unknown. The inelastic neutron scattering experiments will shed light onto the relationship of the lattice and magnetic excitations and thus help to understand the fundamentals of the magnetocaloric effect. You will participate in several scattering experiments at leading neutron sources around the world and have access to a variety of state-of-the-art in-house characterization methods. An important part of the data analysis is the comparison with theoretical models to be developed using appropriate program packages. The successful candidate will be based at the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) situated in Grenoble, France. He/She will be part of a common project conducted by JCNS and the CEA Grenoble and will be directly associated to the cold neutron 3-axis spectrometer IN12 operated by the JCNS. The successful candidate can receive the PhD either from RWTH Aachen University or Université de Grenoble. Requirements * M. Sc. (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials sciences or crystallography * Experience in scattering techniques would be an advantage but is not mandatory * Skills in data analysis and computer simulation are welcome * Basic knowledge of crystallography * Good oral and written command of the English language We Offer * Carrying out research in an international and multidisciplinary environment at leading research facilities for fundamental research using neutrons * Strong interaction with other researcher within ILL and CEA Grenoble, France and Jülich, JCNS, Germany. * Possibilities to attend national and international conferences Forschungszentrum Juelich aims to employ more women in this area and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
