Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Major Duties/Responsibilities The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated beamline scientist for neutron diffraction. As a member of the NOMAD and POWGEN teams, the primary responsibility will be developing a materials research science program on disordered and locally ordered materials using Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis technique. This will involve safe operation and user support for these beam lines, which includes instrument and sample environment commissioning and development, user assistance with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. The candidate is also expected to develop an in house scientific program and conduct high quality research which will result in professional publications and present their findings in national and international technical meetings. Outreach to a broad user base and building a vibrant community of users to support the BES user program at ORNL’s neutron scattering program will be expected. The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. Qualifications Required Ph.D. and a minimum of three to five years of post-doctoral experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or other related science fields is required. Experience in neutron and/or X-ray powder diffraction and computer analysis/programming is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals is required. Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with x-ray or neutron scattering instruments and/or techniques. - Familiarity with modeling total scattering data using techniques such as least squares, RMC, etc. - Previous beamline support experience in a neutron or synchrotron x-ray facility. - vPrevious experience at a neutron scattering facility is desired.
