Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire a Data Analysis Group Leader to provide leadership and direction for the management of scientific software research and development for the NDAV division that supports and enhances the research programs carried out on the neutron scattering beam lines at the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor. Major Duties/Responsibilities - Execute the management and leadership tasks for the Scientific Data Analysis Group in NDAV to include assisting with the execution of the NScD Budget and business plans. - Represent the group before review committees, advisory committees and visitors; at conferences, workshops, invited talks, lectures and technical meetings. - Ensure there is an on-going program of software development and maintenance that fully supports the data reduction and analysis need of SNS and HFIR beam lines. - Interact with the Science Divisions at NScD to provide appropriate software support for their scientific research programs. - Lead active research and development programs within the Scientific Data Analysis Group that collaborate and enhance the neutron scattering programs at SNS and HFIR beam lines and within the science divisions. - Construct and implement strategies to develop software for advanced data analysis and visualization of neutron scattering data. - Collaborate with the NDAV leadership team to ensure the integration of computational software and hardware for the beam lines at SNS and HFIR. - Collaborate with Computational Sciences Directorate, ORNL, to develop and implement a strategy that appropriately leverages the world leading neutron and computational facilities of ORNL. - Collaborate with software teams at other facilities, Universities and companies on software developments that are appropriate and relevant to the NScD scientific mission. - Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements including the ORNL Integrated Safety Management System - Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics. Qualifications Required PhD required in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Modeling, Computational Materials Science or other science related field. Must have five or more years of relevant research experience. Must have a strong background in developing and implementing scientific software for a user community, preferably within a scattering context. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization. Qualifications Desired: Previous experience working at a User Facility is a plus. Previous management and leadership experience is desired. A demonstrated ability to collaborate and complete projects within a diverse scientific and cultural research community is preferred. Work Directions and Interfaces Reports to NDAV Division Director. Measures of Effectiveness Works effectively with NScD and NDAV management on software development. Develops good working relations hips with the neutron scattering user community and supports the user programs at SNS and HFIR with appropriate software developments.
