Overview: The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Neutron Scattering Scientist at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) for the Diffraction group. As a neutron instrument scientist, you will work on two out of three diffraction instruments at HFIR (WAND2/HB- 2A/HB-3A), based on qualifications and preference. Your core responsibility is to support powder and single crystal user experiments, implement technical developments of the beamline capabilities and perform a high-quality personal research program using the facilities at HFIR and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). As a core team member, you will champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of the instruments and expand the user base. A key component of your role is to ensure safe operation and user support of the beamlines, which includes user assistance as local contact, helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. You will have the opportunity to work with users on a wide range of science topics covered by the instruments as well as developing your own research program. On WAND2, recent science examples include diffraction on biological materials, gas absorption in catalyst research and low dimensional magnetism. Planned experiments are stroboscopic time resolved diffraction in ferroelectric materials, in-situ synthesis processes and operando battery research. HB-2A is a state-of-the-art powder diffractometer ideally suited for quantum condensed matter investigations at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. HB-3A is a leading single crystal diffractometer in magnetic structure determination. Pressure measurements form an important part of the research direction on HB-3A and the newly installed detectors will also allow us to accommodate sample environments for measurements to ultra- low temperatures <1 K. This is an excellent opportunity to perform, support and develop the research on world-class single crystal and powder diffraction instruments at HFIR, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a national user facility, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov Major Duties and Responsibilities: * Develop a high-quality personal research program using neutron diffraction, build national and international collaborations, and publish research results in scientific journals. * Assist users as a local contact for experimental setup, data acquisition, user education as appropriate and will ensure users are provided with analyzable data. * Attract users from new areas of research, especially related to the topics of your own research efforts, to expand the user community and the impact of neutron scattering in the physical sciences. Champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of WAND²/HB- 2A/HB-3A. * Contribute to the development of future diffraction instruments and techniques at HFIR, SNS, and the planned Second Target Station. * This position supports programs and facilities at HFIR that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week for 7 fuels cycles (24 days each) per year. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity Basic Qualifications: * Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields * Two or more years of research experience beyond your Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related fields * Experience in neutron and/or X-ray powder and/or single crystal diffraction * Experience with Rietveld and/or single crystal analysis/programming * A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences * Strong written and oral communication skills * Demonstrated ability to work with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and other research scientists from both academia and industry. * Demonstrated ability to work with other technical and scientific support groups to advance sample environment, data reduction and data analysis for neutron powder and single crystal diffraction as well as developing methods to extract information from diffuse scattering. Preferred Qualifications: * Previous beamline support experience in a neutron or synchrotron x-ray user facility * Experience in developing software and sample environment for neutron diffraction * Self-motivation, with the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems.
