Objet: [Neutron] ORNL: Chemical and Engineering Materials Division Diffraction Scientist / NB50494306 Pièces jointes: ATT00001.txt ORNL Publications Job Posting Title Chemical and Engineering Materials Division Diffraction Scientist / NB50494306 Posted Date 06/05/2015 End Posting Date 07/06/2015 Purpose The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research. Each year, these facilities carry out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Major Duties/Responsibilities The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Instrument Scientist on the NOMAD and POWGEN diffractometers at the SNS. The Instrument Scientist will report to the Diffraction Group Leader in CEMD, and will participate in research activities using NOMAD and POWGEN focusing on disordered and locally ordered materials using Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis technique. This will involve safe operation and user support for these beamlines, which includes user assistance as local contact helping with experimental setup, data acquisition and data analysis. The incumbent will champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of the instruments and their neutron science programs. The candidate is also expected to develop a high-quality personal research program related to this field and that is well aligned with the Division mission. The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. Qualifications Required Candidates with Ph.D. and post-doctoral or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or related fields will be considered. Experience in neutron and/or X-ray powder diffraction instrumentation and PDF and Rietveld analysis/programming is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals is required. Ability to develop an independent science program using the above techniques is also required (a research plan should be supplied to demonstrate this). Qualifications Desired: Previous beamline support experience in a neutron or synchrotron x-ray facility. Ability to work with graduate students, post docs and other research scientists from academia and industry. Ability to work with other support group to advance sample environment, data reduction and data analysis of total scattering data. Work Directions and Interfaces This position will report to the Diffraction Group Leader in CEMD. Works closely with research staff in CEMD and programmers in the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division. Collaborates with science programs elsewhere at ORNL. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm, .hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment. If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting@ornl.gov. Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required. If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
