NIST Center for Neutron Research Postdoctoral
Fellowship
Structure/dynamics functional
relationships in energy related
materials
We are seeking candidates for a
postdoctoral position focused on studying energy related
systems and materials such as
battery and hydrogen‐storage materials at the
National Institute of Standards and
Technology’s Center for Neutron Research
(NCNR), Gaithersburg, MD. The NCNR
is a world leader in neutron sciences with 24
operating instruments serving more
than 2200 research participants/year resulting
in 330 scientific publications/year
(annual reports available at
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/AnnualReport/). Besides
the wide array of elastic and
inelastic neutron scattering
instruments, the Center operates a variety of
complementary facilities, from X‐ray
diffractometers, analytic chemistry
instruments and gas adsorption
apparatus, and has access to a wide range of other
state of the art equipment through
partnerships with other NIST labs. and the
University of Maryland.
The successful candidate will
contribute to research aimed at understanding the
physics and chemistry underpinning
hydrogen interactions in modern adsorbent-based
systems with a view to their
implementation in prototype systems. These are
competitive and rapidly advancing
fields that offer the potential to contribute to
both basic science and applied
programs and present an excellent opportunity for a
young scientist to broaden their
experience and develop their expertise. The
primary tools to this end involve
the use of quasi‐elastic, inelastic, neutron
diffraction and neutron imaging
techniques. Candidates must have a PhD in a
physical science a strong work
ethic, good communications skills and a proven
publication record. Experience in
neutron or X‐ray scattering and/or spectroscopy
based techniques is desirable.
The position is open immediately and
the appointment term will be for up to two
years with the potential for
extension. Salary is in the range from $58,000 to
$65,000 depending on qualifications
and experience.
The deadline for the application is
April 20th 2010 or until the position is filled.
