Operator for the High Resolution Powder Neutron Diffractometer and
Laboratory Responsible
NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology
The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking an operator
for the high resolution neutron powder diffractometer with responsibilities
covering day-to-day operation of several sample preparation laboratories. The
NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes available to the
general scientific community advanced neutron instrumentation. The
high-resolution neutron powder diffractometer enables the determination of
atomic and magnetic structures of solid-state materials though Rietveld or
other methods of analysis. One quarter of the instrument time is allocated to a
"mail-in" service, where scientists with successful peer-reviewed
proposals directly send samples for measurement, and the resulting data is
returned for analysis.
In addition to operating the mail-in service, the applicant would
act as one of the laboratory responsibles for our sample preparation
laboratories. The sample preparation laboratories offer users and staff the
equipment and supplies necessary to make, characterize and/or prepare their
samples in a safe environment.
Responsibilities include supporting staff and researchers in the
use of the diffraction instrument; running the mail-in service; sample handling
and setup of sample environment equipment; assist in the organization and
maintenance of the sample preparation laboratories; supporting staff and
researchers in the use of the laboratories.
The position is full time and requires a bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical
Engineering, or Physics. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent oral
and written communication, interpersonal, organizational and mechanical skills,
as well as proficiency with general computing environments. They must be able
to work effectively in a team as well as efficiently perform assigned
independent tasks.
Expressions of interest along with a resume should be sent
(preferably electronically) to:
