The Nuclear Physics Institute (NPI), Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), Czech Republic is contributing to the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, by co-leading the construction of the neutron scattering instrument BEER in collaboration with the Helmholtz- Zentrum Geestacht (HZG), Germany. In relation to this project the ESS offers a position as Instrument Lead Engineer. The mission is to design, construct and bring into operation the neutron instrument BEER at ESS. The Instrument Lead Engineer will be co-leader of the instrument project and will work in close collaboration with the Instrument Lead Scientist. The two will form the core instrument team, and will coordinate work in a multinational collaboration involving partners from the Czech Republic and Germany, and in close communication with ESS-Lund. Some travelling and occasional working abroad is to be expected. The Instrument Lead Engineer takes an instrument concept and turns it into an actual instrument, performing planning, detailed design, procurement, assembly and installation in a project environment. The Instrument Lead Engineer provides technical project leadership, including management and integration of the engineering effort. Together with the Instrument Lead Scientist and a core team of specialists at ESS in Lund, you will perform engineering design work based on the scientific specifications. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the 3D CAD model of the instrument, working with the technical groups for integration and coordinating all engineering efforts related to the instrument. Job description As part of the Core Instrument Team, you will * Provide the engineering leadership and technical project management of the BEER Project. * Take a leading role in defining the project delivery plan, involving scope, budget and schedule. * Coordinate technical activities between the participating partner institutions. * Deliver the instrument to operations according to scope, budget and schedule of the BEER project. Specifically, you will * Lead the implementation of the work produced by the partners and contribute to the planning. * Lead engineering activities from requirements to installations. * Employ the 3D CAD tool Catia V6 for developing and maintaining a model of the instrument * Analyse engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and FEA packages. * Write technical specifications, perform market surveys and price enquiries to find appropriate suppliers. * Assist in tracking and ensuring timely project delivery using ESS processes and appropriate tools. * Supervise technical staff and designers of prototype components. * Represent the project during instrument reviews. * Participate in risk reviews and help manage risks. Qualifications The successful candidate are required to have the following qualifications: * Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, * A minimum of 5 years’ experience in mechanical engineering of complex engineering problems, working in a multi-disciplinary environment. * Experience in a 3D CAD software (Catia V6 preferred, others acceptable). * Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, codes and standards. * A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the implementation of engineering activities such as functional descriptions, requirement definitions, design (conceptual, pre-detailed and detailed studies), and definitions of complex interface systems. * Ability to analyze and solve basic mechanical engineering problems using material strength and materials selection principles. * Ability to learn new tasks and new systems quickly * Capacity to work as part of a team * Excellent communication skills * Excellent oral and written English skills. * Experience of working in an international environment Desirable experience include: * Experience as lead engineer of a neutron instrument construction project or knowledge of neutron or x-ray scattering * Experience in designing and building precise scientific components in a collaborative scientific setting We truly believe that you have excellent skills in collaborating with persons with different knowledge and backgrounds.
