[Neutron] Call for Letters of Intent: Instrumentation at LujanCenter

Call for Letters of Intent

To participate in

Instrument Advisory Teams for

New Lujan Center Instrumentation

The Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at LANSCE, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and

Basic Energy Sciences, Department of Energy

May 1, 2008

The Lujan Center invites individuals and institutions to submit Letters of Intent (LOI) to the Proposal Evaluation Committee expressing a strong interest in participating in building upgrades to existing neutron scattering instruments or new instruments in our anticipated Enhancement of Lujan Center Project (ELP).   The objective of this project is to establish a world-competitive scattering instrument on every available flight path by fiscal year 2013.  The scope currently includes materials research instrumentation including sample environments.  Funding is anticipated in the FY10-FY13 period.

There are eight new or recently upgraded instruments on the Lujan Center’s 17 flight paths.  These instruments are open to upgrade projects or enhanced sample environments.

·         FP02      SMARTS
·         FP04      HIPPO
·         FP09      SPEAR
·         FP11a    Asterix
·         FP13      IN500
·         FP16      Pharos

Two flight paths are open, and four additional flight paths have existing instruments that can be replaced or upgraded in a major way.

·         FP06      SCD
·         FP07      FDS
·         FP08      open
·         FP10      LQD
·         FP11b    open

Letters of Intent may be submitted immediately.  There is no end date to this Call.  LOIs that have arrived by July 1, 2008 will be reviewed and evaluated by the PEC for the initial selection of planning workshops.  We anticipate holding three workshops in August-September, 2008 and additional workshops in FY09.

In one to two pages, each LOI should briefly describe the project of interest, its applications in materials research, the potential community served, and participating individuals and institutions.  The PEC will evaluate the conceptual merit of the proposed project; in-depth technical merit will be assessed at a later pre-proposal stage.  Additional materials such as CVs will be accepted.

LOIs should be sent by post or email to:
