Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Major Duties/Responsibilities The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Senior Scientist in the Chemical Spectroscopy Group. As a member of the VISION team, the primary responsibility will be developing materials research science program associated with ORNL instruments and the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division’s science thrust areas The candidate is expected to develop an in house scientific program and conduct world leading research which will result in professional publications and present their findings in national and international technical meetings. Outreach to a broad user base and building a vibrant community of users to support the BES user program at ORNL’s neutron scattering program will be expected. The candidate is expected to publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. - Will work with the groups Instrument teams to provide user support. This will include helping users to develop user proposals, conduct experiments, and analyze data. - Will collaborate with other staff and research groups at ORNL to conduct world-leading research using the group’s instruments and other instruments at ORNL. - Will work with the groups Instrument teams to conceive, plan, and execute upgrades of the instrument. This will include both hardware and software. - Will take part in development of new methods to advance inelastic neutron scattering, data reduction and analysis. Will ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS. - Will maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics. - Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, extensive work at chemical laboratories, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research. Qualifications Required A Ph.D. and a minimum of 10 years of experience as a Research Scientist in material science, physics, chemistry, or related fields is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on technically and scientifically challenging problems are required. A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals is required. *Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin. Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with x-ray or neutron scattering instruments and/or techniques. - Experience with instrument development, instrument support and software and programming development, particularly at a neutron or x-ray synchrotron facility, is highly desired. - Computer modeling skills of Inelastic Neutron Scattering are a plus. - Previous beamline support experience in a neutron or synchrotron x-ray facility. - Candidates with a current research program in neutron spectroscopy will also be given preference.
