Within this directorate, the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) operates the 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, studying a diverse range of materials using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, small angle neutron scattering, neutron reflectometry and neutron imaging techniques. Each year, more than 1,000 experiments are carried out at HFIR and SNS in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. Scientific research areas include quantum materials, soft matter and polymers, catalysis and interfacial chemistry, materials and engineering, biological materials and systems and applications of computing, modeling and data analytics to analysis of neutron scattering data. Purpose: The Neutron Scattering Division has immediate opening for a postdoctoral associate to work on scientific projects using neutron scattering in the Large Scale Structures (LSS) group. This position represents an excellent opportunity to carry out materials research using neutron scattering in a stimulating multidisciplinary environment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The successful candidate will join a research team consisting of researchers from NSD, the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), and the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) to investigate the deformation behavior of soft materials. This duty mainly involves theoretical development and simulations to establish the framework for the analysis of scattering data and facilitates the implementation of related sample environments for neutron scattering instruments at SNS. Major Duties/Responsibilities * Develop outstanding science and innovative technologies to further understanding of soft matter rheology. * Publish scientific papers resulting from this research and present results at appropriate national and international meetings. * Develop scientific methods and innovative technologies that further the capabilities of the neutron scattering user program. * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements * You will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct by holding yourself and others to the highest scientific, professional, and ethical standards in a manner that fosters mutual respect and enhances the reputation of the individual researcher, his/her colleagues, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in its mission to address the Department of Energy's and the nation's scientific and technical challenges. Qualifications Required Basic Qualifications: * Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field is required. * The candidate should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal communication, presentation skills, and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with research staff at all levels and to work within a multidisciplinary team. * Demonstrated ability to communicate research results in peer-reviewed publications. * All degree requirements must be complete before the appointment can begin, and your application should be within five years of receiving your doctorate degree. Preferred Qualifications: * A background knowledge about the general structural and dynamic properties of soft condensed matter would be a distinct advantage * Knowledge about experimental techniques including small-angle scattering, neutron spin echo and rheometry. * Demonstrated competence in statistical mechanics, analytical calculation and numerical programming. Other Requirements: * This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for 24 months. * Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
