Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. The Nuclear Safety and Experiment Analysis (NSEA) Group within the Research Reactors Division (RRD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks early to mid-career applicants for an applied Research and Development (R&D) staff position as a nuclear safety analyst to support the HFIR. In this capacity, you will be a member of the NSEA Group within RRD providing analytical support to the safe reliable operation of the HFIR. In particular, we are seeking self-motivated, details-oriented, safety analysis support for the supercritical hydrogen HB-4 Cold Source facility. Major Duties/Responsibilities --Preparation and maintenance of the Cold Neutron Source Documented Safety Analysis (CS DSA) and the HFIR Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs). Ancillary support and interfacing with the HFIR SAR may be required as needed. --Assuring technical compliance with 10 CFR Part 830 Subparts A and B, affecting reactor safety, through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management System (SBMS) and RRD procedures. --Assisting other RRD groups with the resources necessary to comply with nuclear safety requirements relative to their respective functions, disciplines and responsibilities. Such groups typically include Operations, Design, and Maintenance. --Application of the unreviewed safety question (USQ) process per ORNL SBMS and RRD procedure directly to the Cold Source Facility and its functional and physical interfaces with other HFIR systems. --Serve as safety analyst for HB-4 Cold Source System and subsystems. As many as twenty subsystems exist. --Provides guidance to engineering, maintenance, and operations on Safety-Related Equipment List and TSR-related concerns with respect to the Cold Source Facility. --Participate in periodic meetings and plant health activities regarding status of the Cold Source. Provide reviews, advice, and recommendations both to RRD management and to staff regarding Cold Source issues as they develop. Participate in long range planning regarding upgrades, improvements, and maintenance for the facility consistent with RRD and ORNL management requests. --Adherence to the rules and regulations that govern the operation of a DOE nuclear facility such as HFIR. --Formulates/postulates research and/or testing needed to validate safety analysis assumptions or controls. Qualifications Required -- B.S. degree in nuclear, mechanical, chemical, or similar engineering discipline -- Strong analytical background in heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics -- Experience with and knowledge of safety issues arising from both hydrogen and cryogenic systems -- Minimum 4 years of experience in engineering or safety analysis, and at least 1 year of nuclear facility experience. -- Previously, or currently qualified to perform USQ evaluations (or similar process for nuclear power plants). -- Be organized, detail-oriented and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture. -- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience working in a team environment, with collaboration at all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds both inside and outside the organization. -- Demonstrated record of customer-oriented, collaborative work ethic -- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “L” clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result. Qualifications Desired -- Advanced degree in a related field. -- Experience performing safety analysis at a DOE nuclear facility using DOE-STD-3009 methodology. -- Experience with hydrogen and cryogenic systems. -- Experience conducting cryogenic analysis and modeling (i.e., Advanced Thermal Hydraulic Energy Network Analyzer [ATHENA]). -- Experience conducting hydrogen gas explosion analysis. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm, .hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size.
