Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Purpose: The Macromolecular Neutron Diffractometer (MaNDi) located at the SNS is a single crystal diffractometer optimized for high signal to noise data collection with applications in computational chemistry, molecular magnets, and protein crystallography. A macromolecular neutron diffractometer is also under consideration as an instrument at the proposed SNS Second Target Station (STS). The successful candidate will conduct scientific research, engage in beamline operations at the MaNDi instrument and be an active participant in developing the conceptual design of a new neutron protein crystallography instrument proposed for the STS. Training will be given in various aspects of neutron protein crystallography (NPC) including sample preparation, beamline operation, data collection, data processing and refinement. Major Duties/Responsibilities Responsible to participate in operations of the MaNDi beam line and provide beam line support to a limited number of users. * The successful candidate will be part of the Energy and the Environment group in the Biology and Soft Matters Division at ORNL and will be expected to take part in all group activities, which include seminars and weekly meetings. * The successful candidate will also be part of a growing team of instrument scientists and specialists developing conceptual designs for STS instruments and will contribute to development of the design of a new NPC instrument for STS. * Conducts and publishes scientific research using the MaNDi instrument. Qualifications Required Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in structural biology, or related discipline, and have strong expertise in protein expression and purification and X-ray crystallography. Candidates must be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills. Qualifications Desired: Previous experience with time-of-flight neutron crystallography is desirable as well as experience gained in conducting experiments at national user facilities. Skills gained in the development of scientific apparatus that include computational modeling and designs are desired. Some knowledge of neutron data collection on MaNDi and the Mantid project for single crystal time of flight data reduction are desirable. Experience with the expression and purification of membrane or membrane-associated proteins is highly desirable. Experience of ligand binding studies using biophysical methods such as SPR or ITC would be desirable. Work Directions and Interfaces Reports to the MaNDi lead instrument scientist. Will interface with the MaNDi instrument team, users of the MaNDi instrument, and with members of the STS instrument design team. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired. We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm, .hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
