Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research. Each year, these facilities carry out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Major Duties/Responsibilities The Biology and Soft Matter Division (BSMD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Instrument Scientist who can bring an established scientific program to the Liquids Reflectometer at the SNS. * Participate in user support, instrument development, and research activities on the Liquids Reflectometer. These will involve user assistance as a local contact helping with experimental setup, data acquisition, and data analysis. * Champion developments in instrumentation and sample environment to help maintain and further develop the performance of the Liquids Reflectometer and its neutron science programs. * Develop a high-quality personal research program that is well aligned with the Division mission. * Publish research results in scientific journals, maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. Other expectations: This position supports programs and facilities that are active 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. This position will require flexibility in schedule, and support may be needed during off hours and weekends in some cases. Qualifications Required Candidates with Ph.D. and post-doctoral or equivalent experience in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields will be considered. Must have a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience after the PhD. Proven expertise in neutron reflectometry is required. A track record of successful user support at a neutron scattering facility is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Qualifications Desired: 8 or more years of relevant instrument scientist experience and a strong background in Soft Condensed Matter Science is desired. Ph.D.-level or post-doctoral employment experience at more than one neutron scattering or synchrotron facility is desired. Demonstrated ability to work with graduate students, post docs and other research scientists from academia and industry. Demonstrated ability to work with other support groups to advance sample environment, data reduction, and data analysis of reflectivity data. Experience with in-situ liquid surface experiments using a Langmuir trough. Experience at both steady-state and spallation neutron facilities. Personal research emphasis on biomembranes and interfaces to compliment the current Liquids Reflectometer team. Work Directions and Interfaces This position will report to the Structure and Dynamics of Soft Matter Group Leader in BSMD. Works closely with research staff in BSMD and CEMD. Collaborates with science programs elsewhere at ORNL. This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
