Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov. Purpose: The role of the Sample Environment Team Leader is to schedule and manage day-to-day operations for a team of technicians in support of scientific user operations. The sample environment team is responsible for deploying and supporting a pool of specialized equipment including high-field magnets, helium dilution refrigerators, furnaces, mechanical load frames, pressure cells, cryostats and closed cycle refrigerators. The Team Leader leads from the front while training / mentoring technicians and is comfortable working in a collaborative multidisciplinary research environment with scientists and engineers. Major Duties/Responsibilities -- Recruits, trains, and leads a technical team. -- Manages a small group of employees to include time approval and employee performance evaluations. -- Develops world-leading capabilities for neutron environments at ORNL, including high magnetic fields, high pressure, controlled gas atmospheres, and temperature environments ranging from 0.03 K to 1800 K. -- Demonstrates expert hands-on skills for developing, testing, operating, and repairing sample environments for neutron scattering. -- Ensures safe operation. -- Interacts, including public speaking and workshop participation and organization, with the scientific user community to identify and meet needs. -- Collaborates with scientists and engineers worldwide to push the frontiers of sample environment. -- Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, occasional climbing, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.* Qualifications Required -- Must have a BS degree, preferably in science or engineering, with a minimum of five years of experience in sample environment or a closely-related scientific or technical field. -- An equivalent combination of training / certification and experience may be considered in place of a BS degree. -- Experience managing a highly technical team in a research environment is required. -- Experience with vacuum. -- Must demonstrate an ability to work with a broad spectrum of people in a research environment. -- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization. *Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
