Description of division The Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) of the European Spallation Source (ESS) is tasked with the mission to assist users of ESS with all their scientific computing needs. This includes experiment control, data curation, reduction and analysis, modelling and simulations, user office software and associated hardware and infrastructure. ESS has two locations in the Øresund / Greater Copenhagen region, with DMSC located in Copenhagen, Denmark, and with experimental facilities and the head quarter located in Lund, Sweden. Description of main responsibilities ESS is a partner in the project Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud (PaNOSC, https://www.panosc.eu) with the objective of implementing Findable, Accessible, Inter-operable, and Reusable (FAIR) data and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) for the international photon and neutron sources in Europe (i.e. ESRF, CERIC ERIC, XFEL, ELI, ILL, and ESS). In this position you will drive the development of content for the e-learning platform at https://www.pan-learning.org for both photon and neutron scattering in collaboration with other European photon and neutron sources. You will also contribute to the development of analysis services and the Virtual Neutron and x-raY Laboratory (VINYL) in PaNOSC and evaluate these services in the context of future ESS users. Some of the training material for pan-learning.org should be an introduction to these services and also leverage those services for training for instance by teaching data analysis using the data analysis service applied to data simulated by VINYL. Moreover, the candidate will get an opportunity to contribute to the development and design of pan-learning.org. PaNOSC receives funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 823852. Qualifications For this position the candidate must have experience with neutron scattering and / or photon scattering and have a clear understanding of the similarities and differences between the two techniques. Moreover, the person should have a clear interest in teaching and knowledge sharing and be proficient in using Python for scientific applications. It is desirable (but not a requirement) if the candidate also have experience with some of the following topics: * Teaching * Development of teaching material, tutorials or user documentation * User support as part of a user programme at a research infrastructure * Development of scientific software * Development of web applications * Molecular or materials modelling and simulations * Knowledge or experience with modern software development practises (e.g. continuous integration) Training will be provided for candidates that do not have all these skills such that they end up with transferable skills in e-learning and scientific software development. Pragmatism and flexibility are essential traits for this position as well as the ability to drive projects and processes and a collaborative mindset. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite and mastering of additional languages is an asset.
