Every year, the French Neutron Society (SFN) organises a school focused on one aspect of neutron scattering techniques.
This school is organised with the support of neutron centers, the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin and the Institut Laue-Langevin.
It is followed by a two days workshop (Journées Rossat-Mignot) where recent results in neutron scattering are presented.
The first half-day of the workshop is shared with the school and is dedicated to oral contributions under the theme of the school.
Together, the School and Workshop form the 22nd Days for Neutron Scattering (JDN 22) that will be held at
"La Vieille Perrotine"
in Oléron island in Poitou-Charentes from 21 to 26 of September 2014.
This year the thematic school "CRYSTALLOGRAPHY AND NEUTRONS" (21-24 September 2014) will celebrate the International Year of Crystallography.
It will focus on the specific strengths of neutron scattering (magnetism, light elements, contrast methods) for the study of various kinds of materials, with regards to other investigative techniques.
It will present the most relevant neutron techniques (diffraction, reflectometry, 3-axes spectroscopy, ... )for various samples, their limitations and their application fields.
It will also show the main technical characteristics of neutron scattering spectrometers available to the French and European communities of crystallographers, chemists, physicists and specialists of Materials Science.
This school suits for beginners or advanced researchers wishing to explore and use the capabilities of neutron scattering.
The training will take place over 5 days, during which lectures on the different techniques of neutron scattering (diffraction, inelastic scattering, reflectometry) will be provided together with practicals.
Specificity and complementarity of these techniques with other laboratory techniques (diffraction and X-ray scattering, reflectivity, X-ray spectroscopy and Raman inelastic scattering) will be highlighted.
The courses will be taught in English.
The event intends to promote cooperation and networking among users of large scale facilities with researchers involved in the field of Crystallography.
The school will be followed by a scientific conference,
the "Rencontres Rossat-Mignod" (24-26 September 2014) presenting the new results obtained by neutron scattering in thematics relevant to the entire scientific community.
Each session will be introduced by an invited talk followed by oral communications. A poster session will be organised during the evening.
